The picture is deceptive. The house was a shop and cafe at the bottom of the path. The path still exists.In front was a large concrete shelf and in the nineteenth century there was a battery of cannons on the shelf, which were manned by the Volunteers. One of their officers was a Mr Venner. His son was the long time Head Scout Leader of the local troup.
